CSPA's Summer Journalism Workshop offers both in-person and virtual options for 2023.

Our one-week, in-person experience on the Columbia campus will take place from June 25-30, 2023 offering four sessions.

Our virtual sessions will take place over three weeks in July, providing instruction, feedback and networking opportunities via remote teleconferencing.

Participants will choose one class for the week, attending the sessions for that particular class each day.

Newspaper Reporting & Writing
The group will focus on the basics of newspaper writing and reporting for news and features articles. A study of sports and opinion writing will also be included with an additional emphasis on writing for the web. The goal of this course is to develop a solid skill set in reporting and writing for students to be prepared to return to their staffs ready to contribute to their publications.

Editorial Leadership
This newspaper editorial leadership sequence will prepare you to embark on a year as a leader on your staff. By the end of the week, you will have a clearer sense of what to expect in the year ahead, tools to help you effectively tackle the challenges in your job, and the confidence to “hit the ground running.” This class is appropriate for experienced or rising leaders from any news staff—print-only, online-only, and hybrid print/online publications.During the week, expect to work individually, in a small group, and as a member of the large group to share and exchange ideas, to solve problems, and to draft materials for use back at school. Come prepared to talk, to contribute, and to exchange dialogue with your peers from around the country.

DESIGN CONCEPTS
In this beginning to intermediate design class, students from all publications will engage in an intense study and practice of basic design concepts including but not limited to design inspiration, appeal to emotion, marriage of elements, photography, type, dominance, design hierarchy, scale and relationship, negative space, photo packaging, mods, and infographics. Students will learn and practice individual concepts Sunday and Monday prior to moving into publication redesign for the remainder of the workshop. The expectation is that students will design actual pages for use in their publications when they return to school.

NEWS REDESIGN
This course is designed for editors and/or section editors of newspapers who can make authoritative decisions on the overall concept and design of the publication. Traditional newspapers or newsmagazines are welcome. In this course, you will learn how to redesign your publication from start to finish, first coming up with a concept that works for your staff and your school, then developing and executing a design that will enhance your storytelling throughout the year. This will include everything from content-driven design to set designs that you can use throughout the year. You will make every important design decision from font families to paper width to spot color. This is not a beginner’s course, and we will not be going over how to use InDesign. You will also need to be able to work individually or as part of a team. While there are several group discussions and lessons, a large chunk of your time will be spent working on your individual paper. It’s extremely important that you be able to take criticism. The goal of this course is to walk away with an excellent product you can take back to school and use immediately. There will be a lot of discussions, a lot of tweaking, and perfecting. Being able to listen to critiques and apply lessons from them are key.

ADVISERS BOOTCAMP
Whether you’re a rookie or a seasoned veteran, this weeklong advisers-only session might be just what you need. Among the topics we’ll cover:
Teaching the Basics, from Verbal to Visual: Writing/reporting, editing, design, photography/photo editing and web/online, all at the same time and without wanting to kill yourself

Taking Your Publication Online (as a hybrid print/online product or exclusively online)
