Explore civil, architectural, and environmental engineering while learning about designing and maintaining infrastructure projects, designing buildings that work, and designing systems, processes, and policies enabling people to co-exist more sustainably with the environment during a week-long summer institute!




Participants will learn about the three engineering majors in the CAEE Department at Drexel University, namely Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE). After attending the Summer Institute, participants will better understand these three majors so they can use this information to help choose their engineering major when applying to universities. The Summer Institute will also cover important information such as different career paths, sample occupations, and typical employers for each major.
In-person
The camp will include presentations, field work, and hands-on lab and classroom activities related to the CAEE majors.
Activities will include:
- Lab activity about transportation engineering
- Lab activity about structural engineering
- Designing and testing a wooden bridge
- Lab activity about water treatment
- Lab activity about air quality
- Lab activity about architectural engineering thermal design
- Lab activity about self-healing concrete
- Lab activity about engineering properties of materials in civil engineering
- Lab activity about concrete mix design and follow-up concrete cylinder breaking
- Site visit to a highway materials company to learn about quarry operations, asphalt, and recycling of construction materials
- Site visit to the Drexel Academy of Natural Sciences to learn about field samples used in environmental sciences and engineering
Applicants must be rising 10th to 12th grade students.
Essay ~250 word Personal Statement describing (i) your career interests and (ii) why you are interested in the CAEE Summer Institute.
The 2023 CAEE Summer Institute has a limit of 30 participants, based on application date and admission meeting requirements.
Applicant decisions will be sent by April 1. Payment of $425 is due by April 15. The second payment of $425 is due by May 15.
Financial Aid
We will have a limited number of financial, need-based scholarships available consisting of a 50% discount in the tuition. Applicants interested in applying for financial aid scholarships will need to submit additional information. The deadline for the financial aid scholarship application is also March 15, 2023 by 5 p.m.
