In the Self-Paced Program, students can explore introductory coding with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or more advanced applications of Python with a focus on cybersecurity. During the Self-Paced Program, students work at their own pace while having the opportunity to build community through weekly live advisory sessions and activities. This program is open to all high school students, graduating seniors, and even summer programs alumni!

Format

The Self-paced Program is fully online, and students have 6 weeks to complete course projects at their own pace.

Program Details

Girls Who Code offers two FREE programs in the summer: the virtual Summer Immersion Program and the Self-Paced Program. Applicants can apply for BOTH programs, if eligible. However, students can only participate in one summer program.

There are three coursework track options available for Self-Paced Program students.
New Data Science track
Cybersecurity track
Web Development track

Each course and its accompanying project will take students 3-6 hours to complete. For each completed course, students will earn a certificate that can be posted on social media. Students should expect to spend 8-15 hours on a track. To be considered Self-Paced Program alumni and join the Girls Who Code Alumni Network, students need to complete at least one course and earn one certificate. However, we encourage students to complete as many courses as possible to earn as many certificates as they can in the allotted 6-week program duration.

The Self-Paced Program has a loose schedule since it is meant to complete at your own pace. However, we offer Student Hours at various times, happening twice a week. We highly encourage students to attend optional Student Hours and optional weekly Advisor & Partner Events when available.

Eligibility

The Self-Paced Program is a 6-week flexible computer science course for currently eligible 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade US students and international students ages 14-18 who identify as girls and prefer not to adhere to a set schedule.

To apply, eligible students must complete our 2023 Summer Programs application hosted on the SurveyMonkey Apply platform. In this application, eligible students will indicate their interest in applying for the virtual Summer Immersion Program, Self-Paced Program, or both.

Please Note: Students can pause and return to edit and complete their application later, as needed. GWC does not ask for GPA, transcript, or any recommendations.
