Academics

The Summer Language Program supports the mission of HDS and the education of our students by allowing them the opportunity to engage in language study designed specifically for the curriculum in theology and religious studies. Summer language study enriches students' ongoing course work and grounds them for future work in academia and ministry. Students from other schools and even other countries travel to the SLP to take advantage of our high-quality instruction and our unique curricular strengths. Read an interview with SLP director Karin Grundler-Whitacre.

The program does not grant degrees. However, students who are admitted to an HDS degree program may count SLP courses toward the course requirements under the normal course restrictions of their program, including specific language study limitations.

Format

Classes are held three days a week for a minimum of nine hours of instruction per week. Please note that certain courses, like Classical Arabic or Christian Latin, require additional, mandatory weekly meeting sessions with the teaching fellow. Other classes will offer additional times with the teaching fellows on a voluntary basis. Regular attendance of all class meetings is expected.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the Summer Language Program (SLP) as a means of preparing to meet language requirements without the pressures of other simultaneous coursework. It should be noted, however, that many students have found the amount of work required by SLP to prohibit full-time employment during the summer, and working full-time while taking the SLP is not recommended.

Please note: The information below refers to the 2023 SLP session, and should only be viewed as examples. Please check back in spring 2024 for updated course information.
The 2023 Summer Language Program offers the following languages for translation and reading reading (if there will be sufficient enrollment by May 5, 2023):

Classical Arabic

Intermediate New Testament and Hellenistic Greek
Elementary Biblical Hebrew

Course Credit
Summer Language Program courses correspond both in quality and quantity of work to a full course given throughout the academic year (or to two one-semester courses). Each SLP course is eight units (two semesters) of credit; a unit is approximately equivalent to one semester-hour in academic institutions using that system of evaluation. Courses must be taken for a letter grade only. Students may audit, but only with payment of full tuition.

The Summer Language Program does not grant degrees. HDS degree students may count SLP courses toward the course requirements under the normal course restrictions of their program, including specific language study limitations. Non-HDS students may request official transcripts for credit earned. (Students enrolled in degree programs at other institutions are advised to have their SLP courses approved in advance by the appropriate officer in their own school if they wish to have credit applied toward their degree program.)
