Academics

You will complete 1 full year of language training in only 2 months. Classes are practical and emphasize the development of real-time communication skills.
In the Immersion Workshop you will study 20 hours per week in small classes (8-12 students on average) led by highly experienced instructors. After class you will complete 3-4 hours of independent study to prepare for the next day’s class and will have 30-45 minutes of one-on-one practice with an individual language skills trainer. You will have the opportunity to participate in daily informal activities led by Workshop faculty and by scholars, performers, and practitioners from regions where your language is spoken.
Structured immersive study is one of the fastest ways to learn a language. Immersion students travel to Indiana to devote themselves fully to developing language and culture skills. They commit to speaking only the language of study for 8 weeks and they live, work, and eat with fellow students and faculty of their language. There are three workshop options:
1 - Arabic Workshop
2 - Chinese Workshop
3 - Russian Workshop
Not all Workshop languages are taught immersively. Languages with no on-campus immersion are taught online.
In the intensive Online Workshop you will study 17-20 hours per week in live online classes with an instructor and with other students. After class you will complete 2-3 hours of independent study to prepare for the next day’s class. You can also take part in interactive, real-time cultural activities with visiting scholars, performers, and practitioners.
Like all Workshop courses, these classes are accelerated and intensive and are focused on providing communicative competency in the new language in a short time.
Each course is unique, so check the individual language page for details on the languages that interest you. It is possible to choose the language you are interested in learning: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian, Chuvash, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Japanese, Korean, Kurdish, Kyrgyz, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mongolian, Navajo, Norwegian, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Swahili, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Vietnamese.

At the end of the Workshop, you will receive an external assessment of your language proficiency and an OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) certificate.
