Academics

Program Overview:
The Tisch Summer High School Program is tuition-based and culminates in four to six college credits (units). This program includes projects, professional training, and collaboration. The classes are based on the Tisch undergraduate curriculum. Students in the Tisch Summer High School Program are expected to complete any coursework and professional training requirements of the artistic track they are enrolled in. Students apply to one of these artistic tracks: Dance, Drama, Production & Design, Dramatic Writing, Filmmaking, Game Design, Photography and Imaging, or Recorded Music.

Format

Students accepted to the Tisch Summer High School program live in NYU housing. Per NYU policy, students must to be at least 15 to reside in housing for this program.

Program Details

DANCE
In addition to rigorous technical practice, students create new dance compositions and learn existing repertory from established New York City-based dance artists. We also provide opportunities to explore newer areas of dance research, including kinesiology and dance science, and the role of new technology in dance creation. Students share their own compositions with faculty in weekly showings; the program culminates in a final studio showing for faculty, family and friends (6 units).

DRAMA
Each week you will have 28 hours of conservatory training at either the Atlantic Acting School, the Experimental Theatre Wing, the Meisner Studio, the New Studio on Broadway, the Stonestreet Screen Acting Studios, or in the Production and Design Studio. You will also take a weekly Introduction to New York Theatre seminar with professional actors, directors, designers, stage managers, and faculty as guests.
There are two opportunities to showcase your work: a performance for faculty and students, and an open-class day where your family and friends can attend.
Each studio has its own training techniques and curriculum. You should select the program which most closely fits your interests. All students will be registered for 4 units of studio and 2 units of New York Theatre.

DRAMA: PRODUCTION & DESIGN
Each week you will have 28 hours of conservatory style coursework in areas such as management, scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, drafting, drawing, and painting. You will also take a weekly Introduction to New York Theatre seminar with professional actors, directors, designers, stage managers, and faculty as guests.

DRAMATIC WRITING
The Rita and Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing offers a highly focused academic and professional writing program for students who have the talent and the will to write for theatre, film, and television.
The combination of screenwriting and playwriting will give you an exciting introduction to the world of dramatized storytelling. The lectures in this program will help you explore the nature and principles of dramatic action, the relationship between character and circumstance, and how dramatic structure arises from these foundations.
In the workshop sessions, you’ll present work, which is then reviewed, critiqued, and rewritten. In screenwriting, this process results in an outline and the partial scripting of a full-length screenplay; in playwriting, it culminates in a ten-minute play where you’ll work together as a repertory company to rehearse, critique, and rewrite your plays. On the last day of classes you will have the opportunity to perform them.
In addition to the performance of the ten-minute plays, your monologues are directed and acted by professional actors and directors who work with the department on a regular basis. Readings of classic plays and screenplays along with screenings of movies and tapes of important theatrical productions complement the course work (6 units).

GAME DESIGN
Learn the creative and technical skills of digital game development from the professionals. This intensive summer program covers the various skills and disciplines that are brought together in modern game development: game design, programming, visual art, animation, sound design, and writing.
The NYU Game Center is dedicated to the exploration of games as a cultural form and game design as creative practice. This unique residential program invites a select group of students to become a part of the next generation of game designers, developers, and entrepreneurs (6 units).

PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGING
Through the Summer High School Program in Photography and Imaging, you will focus on using photo-based image-making for storytelling, communication, creative expression, personal exploration, and digital output. The course will address contemporary photographic culture and emphasize the development of individual voices and vision through assignment prompts and self-directed projects and research (4 units).

RECORDED MUSIC
During the four-week program summer program for high school students, you become entrepreneurs-in-training by studying how music is recorded, produced, and distributed to consumers. To complement the technical training, you will also learn how music companies are conceptualized, created, and grown as well as how new technologies are changing the way we hear music.
Exposure to a wide range of current practices, as well as to those executives and artists changing the rules in the new digital era, are core components of this instruction. Master-class lectures by known innovators and visionaries on topics such as touring, artist management and digital media will be offered exclusively to participants of this program.
Ultimately, the summer high school program will have a strong focus on educating students on how to be responsible and informed makers, consumers, and distributors of popular music (6 units).

Summer Filmmakers Workshop
The curriculum for the Summer Filmmakers Workshop for High School Students, offered through the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, is similar to that of the undergraduate degree program. It combines intensive professional training with a comprehensive understanding of the techniques and theories behind the art of cinematic visual storytelling production. Prior experience in film or video is not required.
(4 units)

Note: The Tisch Summer High School Program is not a leisure camp. While the average program runs daily, Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm, including academic classes, professional training, and/or studio and production time, students will often be just as busy in the evenings and weekends which also include curricular events and opportunities to work individually or collaborate with peers on assigned projects.
