Academics

The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP) is an academic enrichment program for students from low-income, underrepresented backgrounds. Over five weeks, participants engage in faculty lectures, professional development workshops, Stanford Medicine networking events, and a public health disparities research project. During the program and beyond, participants are mentored by faculty, health professionals, and college students on preparing for college, navigating careers in medicine, and becoming a leader today.

Format

Our 2023 program will be held on the Stanford campus from June 23 to July 28, 2023. SMYSP is a full-time weekly summer program. Students will be expected to travel to Stanford’s main campus Monday through Friday for the duration of the program.

Program Details

Students will divide their time between the following activities:

Stanford Hospital Internship: 1.5 days per week
Students are placed in hospital internships throughout Stanford Hospital. SMYSP students study not only the factual knowledge of health and medical science but also gain experience in the various aspects of health care delivery such as hands-on laboratory and departmental activities, shadowing experiences and observation, and patient interaction.

These internships provide exposure to the various health and medical professions through hands-on activities, shadowing, as well as formal and informal discussions, and support students to gain confidence in their ability to succeed in the science and medical professions.

Public Health Research Project: Hours variable
Participants engage in a health disparities group research project to improve health and health access in all communities. Students will work in small groups to write a college-level research paper, presentation, and academic poster. Examples of research projects include addressing racial inequities in COVID-19 health outcomes, examining low birth outcomes for African American mothers, and combatting language barriers in hospital settings.

Community Building and Mentorship: Hours variable
We foster opportunities for participants to develop enduring friendships and support systems that last long beyond the summer program. Our passionate team of mentors and counselors support participants to build their confidence, develop a college action plan, and reach their full potential.

Explore the Exciting World of Science and Medicine
When students attend the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program, not only do they learn and develop as a student, but they are mentored and empowered to begin their path to college and medical careers. We build a cohort of passionate, like-minded peers, who will become the next generation of health leaders.

• Academic Records:
We require unofficial transcripts for each school or academic program you took graded courses. If you have multiple grade reports from one school, rather than one transcript from that school, please combine that into a single file for upload. Homeschooled applicants should submit a document similar to a transcript with their coursework from the years listed above. Homeschooled students should also submit transcripts from any graded courses they took with a school or program during this period.

• 2 Teacher Recommendations:
We require two (2) recommendations to be included with your application. One recommendation should come from a science, math, engineering, or computer science teacher. The second recommendation should come from a counselor, principal, or mentor (which can include another teacher). To ensure timely submission, please request your recommendations at least two weeks before the application deadline.

• Work Sample (Optional):
You may choose to submit a recent sample of your work in the sciences or mathematics. The ideal sample demonstrates your problem solving or reasoning skills in a substantial way. Possible work samples include: math quizzes or tests showing the level of difficulty of your most recent work (multiple choice exams are only acceptable if your shown work was also graded), math or science problem sets with written solutions, or science lab reports.

• SMYSP will review all applications and invite up to 60 finalists to interview. Interviews will be held late April through early May and final admissions decisions will be sent no later than Mid-May 2023.

Deadline

Applications are now closed.
Decisions will be released mid-May 2023
