HCSSiM is an intensive six-week encounter with college-level mathematics for talented and highly motivated high school students. It is demanding and expanding.

Initially, Summer Studies participants will be partitioned into workshops, each led by a college or university professor and one or two graduate or undergraduate students. Each workshop will actively and intensively investigate problems from many areas of mathematics, with emphasis on unifying themes, recurrent patterns, and fruitful modes of inquiry. The particular topics are not predetermined by syllabus, but will be chosen by the instructors to challenge the interests and abilities of the participants. All students will have access to computer instruction (including Mathematica) during the workshop, and will be encouraged to use Hampshire’s facilities throughout the summer (but not for games or network cruising).
Midway through our six-week session, students and staff will regroup into “maxi-courses” and “mini-courses” for in-depth studies of particular problems and fields. Students will be able to select topics such as combinatorics, number theory, complex numbers, probability, four-dimensional geometry, fractals and chaos, graph theory, topology, and cellular automata.
HCSSiM students live in the dorms at Hampshire College in Massachusetts for six summer weeks, and study and play in its fields, woods, and academic buildings (not typically in that order). Typically, there are as many girls and non-binary students as boys.
We will again be in person and care about the health and safety of our participants. Students and staff will be required to be fully vaccinated and boosted for covid-19, in accordance with current CDC guidelines and definitions, along with the guidelines and expectations of Hampshire College and the Massachusetts Department of Health.
We don’t accept ages; and if we did, mathematical age would be more important than chronological age. Actually, we accept everyone; but we can’t invite all of our applicants.
Most students come to HCSSiM after their sophomore or junior years in high schools. Recent programs have included students who have just completed their 9th grade and have taken more advanced math. We’re open to an occasional even younger student. In any event, none of this information should dissuade anyone from entering the getting-to-know-each-other process by submitting an application unless you have already graduated from high school. Applying is free, fun, fast, obligationless, doable online, and doable while other options are under active investigation. Not applying unnecessarily closes a door, shuts off communication, means not seeing the Interesting Test, may cause boredom, and serves to encourage producers of reality tv shows.
Application Process:
1. Fill out the the application form. This will require that you write a letter that includes an indication of your reasons for thinking that spending 8 hours a day doing math during the summer is a reasonable thing to do. You will also be asked to name a sponsor, who should be someone who knows you in a mathematical context and who is willing to write a letter of recommendation in support of your application.
2. Late March (assuming you followed Step 1) you’ll get an email with the 2022 Hampshire College Summer Studies in Mathematics Interesting Test attached. If you don’t, please send an email.
3. Enjoy the IT.
4. You then have two options:
You can scan your work, and email it to us. We get lots of of applications, so please be sure to put your name, the date, and the word “IT” in the subject line and on each and every attachment.

Deadline
Thanks for your interest in HCSSiM 2023. We have received a record number of applications and have decided to stop inviting new ones. Please check back next year for the applications to the 52nd Summer Studies.
The base cost of the Summer Studies is $5780 per student. This fee covers tuition, room, and 3 meals a day for six weeks, transportation to/from local bus, train, and airplane services, and recreational activities. This does not include personal expenses or travel costs to and from the program. You will notice, after doing a little comparison shopping, that our fee is generally modest compared to other programs — and few of them are six weeks long.
Financial Aid
We offer substantial financial aid, with all decisions based on need. The program will be free for all domestic students whose family household income is under $68,000. In addition, we offer travel grants for families who cannot afford transportation to/from Amherst. For families with household income above $68,000 and international students, the size of award will be decided on a case-by-case basis, and may also include travel support. We will ensure that all invited students may attend regardless of their financial circumstances.
