Learn an entire year of a language online this summer! This program is ideal for academically advanced high school students who want the opportunity to either learn a new language or continue learning a language in classes with current UChicago students as well as visiting undergraduate and graduate students.
Students have the opportunity to take modern or ancient language courses. Beginning and intermediate intensive modern language courses are designed for students wishing to develop proficiency across all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Beginning and intermediate ancient language courses guide students in building and honing their reading abilities and their familiarity with ancient texts and culture.
The Summer Language Institute (SLI) has the course for you, whether you need to acquire proficiency skills to prepare to:
• Study abroad
• Gain reading skills in a language for scholarly research
• Learn to read texts in their original language
LI offers several categories of language courses:
• Beginning and intermediate intensive modern language courses are designed for students wishing to develop proficiency across all four language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—at a speed that is the equivalent of a year or more of instruction during the regular academic year.
• Beginning and intermediate ancient language courses guide students in building and honing their reading abilities and their familiarity with ancient texts and culture.
• Reading for Research courses focus on the skills graduate students need to access scholarly texts in other languages.
Pre-College Summer Language Institute will be taught remotely online. There is no hybrid or in-person option for these courses. Students cannot live in residence on campus if they enroll in an online course.
Courses are between six and eight weeks long.
Each intensive Summer Language course, regardless of length, is the equivalent to three quarter-long (10 week) courses, and meets for a least 90 contact hours.
