The vision for Summer School is to be students’ No. 1 choice on how to spend their summer time and its mission to encourage, motivate and support Academic Affairs units in offering summer courses.

The UNC Summer School office administers courses offered in Academic Affairs. More than 50 departments or curricula of the College of Arts and Sciences and six professional schools in Academic Affairs offer a diverse array of summer classes, including field courses, research courses, and graduate-level labs,. More than 550 undergraduate class sections include hundreds of courses that meet General Education perspectives and other academic requirements.
The summer calendar has two sessions, each covering 5 1/2 weeks of classes plus final exams, and Maymester. Regular session classes typically meet every day for 90 minutes. Daytime, late-afternoon, and night courses allow students to coordinate courses with work, family, and travel. Summer School offerings include many of the university’s most popular and sought-after courses.
Maymester, begun as a pilot project in 2007, became a permanent part of First Session in 2010. About 50 courses are taught in extended class time in three weeks, and a few include travel.
Courses at UNC-Chapel Hill can be one of five modes of instruction. The modes are as follows:
1 - In-person, On-campus Learners
2 - In-person, On-campus and Remote Learners
3 - Synchronous Remote
4 - Mostly Asynchronous Remote
5 - Fully Asynchronous Remote
Course Load
The maximum course load allowed for high school students cannot exceed more than 4 credit hours in Maymester/First Session or more than 4 credit hours in Second Session.
Class Attendance
Regular class attendance is a student obligation. Students are responsible for all of their work, including assessments, tests, and written work, and for all class meetings. If a course instructor chooses to take attendance and sees that a student misses three or more consecutive class meetings or misses more classes than the course instructor thinks advisable, the instructor may report the facts to the student’s advisor and/or academic dean.
No right or privilege exists that permits a student to be absent from any class meetings, except University Approved Absences.
By policy set by the Summer School Administrative Board, only honor roll students who have completed their junior year of high school may apply to Summer School as visiting students. By policy set by the Summer School Administrative Board, international high school students cannot be considered for admission. Rising high school seniors are not eligible to audit courses at UNC.
In addition to completing the online application, the following are required for high school students:
1 - An up-to-date transcript,
2 - A personal statement to the Academic Director of Summer School stating the purpose for taking the specific course(s) that you identify by number and name, the reason for taking the course(s) at UNC-Chapel Hill rather than elsewhere, and the future expectation for enhanced educational opportunity that would result,
3 - A letter of recommendation from the most appropriate teacher or principal, headmaster, or counselor confirming your preparation and ability to take this particular course(s), and
