Designed to provide students with a glimpse of Wharton’s undergraduate curriculum, Leadership in the Business World Program offers opportunities to learn about leadership in 21st century organisations through a dynamic and rigorous mix of classes with Wharton professors and business leaders, real-time business simulations, and team-building activities.
Leadership in the Business World (LBW) is an intensive summer program for a select group of rising seniors who want an introduction to a top-notch undergraduate business education and the opportunity to hone their leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. Since 1999, LBW has brought students from six continents and nearly every state to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Designed to provide students with a glimpse of Wharton’s undergraduate curriculum, LBW offers opportunities to learn about leadership in 21st century organizations through a dynamic and rigorous mix of classes with Wharton professors and business leaders, real-time business simulations, and team-building activities.
Each summer, LBW students:
• Attend lectures and presentations from outstanding Wharton faculty and guest speakers
• Participate in classroom discussions about core business subjects, including research-based theories of leadership and teamwork
• Practically apply real-world business practices through Wharton Interactive’s digital simulations and case competitions
• Conduct research on business enterprises and speak with successful leaders across the industries of finance, entrepreneurship, entertainment, real estate, retail, and more
Admission:
Admission to LBW is highly selective. Each year the admissions committee receives many more applications than there are available places. Wharton will select approximately 120 students to attend per session. Selections are based on a record of academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, and a genuine interest in developing leadership skills.
All participants who successfully complete the program will earn a Wharton Global Youth Certificate of Completion.
Academic classes are held Monday-Friday with extracurricular activities available in the evenings and on the weekends. Students move in on Sunday pre-program, and move out the final Saturday of the program.

In the evening, students will have a number of extracurricular activities to choose from. Students can also opt to work on their final project with their group, meet with the program TAs, and/or relax at the dorm.
Campus Life & Activities
After class, take a walk down Locust Walk in the heart of campus, visit Ben on the Bench, or admire the campus architecture and tree-lined walkways. Penn is known for its extraordinary athletic and recreational facilities. Organize pick-up games in Penn Park or play tennis with a friend at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
Located in the University City neighborhood, Penn is near a multitude of shopping and dining options. Immerse yourself in Philadelphia’s history and culture with supervised visits to art museums, parks, historic sites, and more! Test your skills at detecting counterfeit bills at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia or relax with friends overlooking the Delaware River. “The City of Brotherly Love” has something for everyone!
Students in our programs live in one of the Penn residence halls, which are only a short walk from the dining hall and academic buildings.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

High school students currently enrolled in grade 11 with demonstrated leadership experience and academic excellence of a 3.5 unweighted GPA or higher. International applicants are welcome.
• Minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA, or equivalent
• Unofficial Transcript
High school transcripts and/or grade reports are required for application. Please upload an unofficial copy directly into the online application system. At least two marking periods of grades are required for review. If two marking periods are not available on your current high school transcripts, we recommend uploading a copy of 8th grade transcripts as well.
• Recommendation
A recommendation completed by a high school guidance counselor, teacher, or advisor is required for application.
• 2 Essays
1. Tweet-style bio: In 140 characters or less, give us your biography as if it were a tweet.
2. Select a leader you admire from your local community. Explain your selection and give example of how they demonstrate effective leadership. 200-300 words
• Application Supplement
Video OR Written Supplement: Help us get to know you better. Record a 90-second video OR share a written statement of 400 words (or less) that introduces you. Feel free to discuss your leadership roles, topics or issues you are most passionate about, your identity, ambitions, or motivation for applying to this program. Please provide the URL of your video or upload your written statement directly into the application.
• English Proficiency Scores
Non-native English speakers should submit test scores to verify English language proficiency. If the student attends a high school where the primary language of instruction is English, this requirement is automatically waived. If submitting test scores, please note the admissions committee prefers TOEFL or IELTS scores, when available. The minimum TOEFL score required for admission is 100 (iBT.) The minimum IELTS score required is a 7. If TOEFL or IELTS scores are not available, applicants may submit PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores as an alternate. To submit, please upload an unofficial copy of your score report to the online application.
• Standardized Test Scores
The submission of standardized test scores is optional. If you have score reports you wish to share you may upload an unofficial copy of your score report to the online application. Score reports should include your name.
• Activities of Activities/ Achievements
An array of extracurricular activities and/or personal achievements that denote intellectual curiosity, ability to collaborate, initiative and ambition, or diversity of interests and ideas.
• Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee of $100 is required. If applying through a community-based organization or scholarship agency, students might be eligible for an application fee waiver.
• International Students
International students are a welcome addition to Wharton’s summer high school programs. Participants are encouraged to obtain a short-stay B-2 TOURIST visa from the American Embassy or Consulate in their home country, if they do not already have one.
ON-CAMPUS PROGRAM FEES INCLUDE:
Full academic and term fees, use of Penn academic facilities, on-campus housing, two meals a day Monday-Friday, two meals on Sunday (no meals Saturday due to excursions/activities), extracurricular activities and trips, student supervision.
ON-CAMPUS PROGRAM FEES DO NOT INCLUDE:
Non-refundable $100 application fee, travel to/from campus, airport transfers, gym access (may be available for additional fee); linens; class materials; meals eaten off campus; medical expenses; laundry; souvenirs; and personal spending money.
Financial Aid
The Wharton Global Youth Program is committed to supporting academically ambitious students with demonstrated financial need. Through a variety of need-based scholarships and financial awards, a select number of eligible program participants are provided with full or partial funding.
