The Management & Technology Summer Institute (M&TSI) is a rigorous and rewarding for-credit summer program for high school students, where classes are taught by leading Penn faculty and successful entrepreneurs. An intensive team prototyping project and other activities are designed to give students the opportunity to learn about the principles and practice of technological innovation.






The Management & Technology Summer Institute (M&TSI) is a rigorous and rewarding for-credit summer program for rising high school seniors and a select number of rising high school juniors interested in exploring the integration of technological concepts and management principles.
Run by the Jerome Fisher Program in Management & Technology in partnership with Penn Engineering and the Wharton School, M&TSI features classes taught by leading Penn faculty and successful entrepreneurs, an intensive team prototyping project and other activities designed to give students the opportunity to learn about the principles and practice of technological innovation.
M&TSI is an extremely rigorous, non-stop, fast-paced college course that introduces students to the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for successfully linking technology and management concepts in just three weeks.
M&TSI selects 75 participants to attend the summer program. Selections are based on academic achievement and leadership in extracurricular activities (including school and non-school-based activities such as student government, community service, artistic and cultural, and athletic activities).
Highlights of M&TSI include:
• Courses taught by full-time Wharton and Penn Engineering faculty
• Attendees explore Penn’s business and engineering offerings, hearing guest lectures from prominent faculty recognized as leaders in their field
• Students build and present a prototype and go-to-market plan for their own high-tech venture
• Project presentations are evaluated by Penn faculty, receiving feedback from seasoned entrepreneurs and investors
• Students participate in simulations led by industry innovators such as Google
• Attendees receive a full Penn college-course credit for successful completion of program
Campus Life & Activities
After class, take a walk down Locust Walk in the heart of campus, visit Ben on the Bench, or admire the campus architecture and tree-lined walkways. Penn is known for its extraordinary athletic and recreational facilities. Organize pick-up games in Penn Park or play tennis with a friend at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
Located in the University City neighborhood, Penn is near a multitude of shopping and dining options. Immerse yourself in Philadelphia’s history and culture with supervised visits to art museums, parks, historic sites, and more! Test your skills at detecting counterfeit bills at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia or relax with friends overlooking the Delaware River. “The City of Brotherly Love” has something for everyone!
Students in our programs live in one of the Penn residence halls, which are only a short walk from the dining hall and academic buildings.

Rising high school seniors and a select number of rising high school juniors
• Minimum 3.5 unweighted GPA, or equivalent
• Unofficial Transcript
High school transcripts and/or grade reports are required for application. Please upload an unofficial copy directly into the online application system. At least two marking periods of grades are required for review. If two marking periods are not available on your current high school transcripts, we recommend uploading a copy of 8th grade transcripts as well.
• Recommendations
2 letters of recommendation completed by a high school guidance counselor, teacher, or advisor are required for application.
• Essay
In 500 words or less, describe a problem you solved using your technical and/or business creativity and skills.
• Application Supplement
Video Submission: Please record a 90-second video of yourself sharing any additional comments you might have. Feel free to speak about yourself, your application, your interest in M&TSI, or anything you feel will help us get to know you better. Please provide the URL of your video within your online application.
If submitting a video supplement is not possible, you may submit a 500 word written statement as a substitute. This statement should address the same topics as a video and should be uploaded directly to the application system.
• English Proficiency Scores
Non-native English speakers should submit test scores to verify English language proficiency:
1. If the student attends a high school where the primary language of instruction is English, this requirement is automatically waived.
2. If submitting test scores, TOEFL or IELTS scores are preferable, when available. The minimum TOEFL score required for admission is 100 (iBT.) The minimum IELTS score required is a 7. If TOEFL or IELTS scores are not available, applicants may submit PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores as an alternate.
• Standardized Test Scores
The submission of standardized test scores is optional. If you have score reports you wish to share you may upload an unofficial copy of your score report to the online application. Score reports should include your name.
• Activities of Activities/ Achievements
An array of extracurricular activities and/or personal achievements that denote intellectual curiosity, ability to collaborate, initiative and ambition, or diversity of interests and ideas.
• Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee of $100 is required. If applying through a community-based organization or scholarship agency, students might be eligible for an application fee waiver.
• International Students
International students are a welcome addition to Wharton’s summer high school programs. Participants are encouraged to obtain a short-stay B-2 TOURIST visa from the American Embassy or Consulate in their home country, if they do not already have one.
Deadline
• Priority deadline to apply: February 1st, 2023
All International applicants and students seeking scholarship funding are strongly encouraged to apply by the Priority Deadline.
• Final application deadline: April 1st, 2023
On-Campus program fees include: Full academic and term fees including 1 college credit unit from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, use of Penn academic facilities and labs, lab materials, on-campus housing, two meals a day Monday-Friday, two meals on Sunday (no meals Saturday due to excursions/activities), extracurricular activities and trips, student supervision.
Not included: Non-refundable $100 application fee, travel to/from Penn’s campus, Pottruck Gym access; off-campus meals; medical expenses; laundry; and personal spending money.
Financial Aid
The M&T Program is committed to supporting academically ambitious students with demonstrated financial need. Through a variety of need-based scholarships and financial awards, we are able to provide full or partial funding for a select number of eligible program participants.
