Essentials of Leadership is an intensive, two-week summer opportunity for an outstanding business education. Participants develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, while learning from Wharton faculty. This online experience involves case competitions and interactive digital simulated trip to Saturn to navigate the obstacles of interstellar travel and achieve the goals of the mission.
Essentials of Leadership is an intensive, two-week summer opportunity for a select group of students seeking an introduction to outstanding undergraduate business education. Participants will develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, while learning from and collaborating with Wharton faculty, guest speakers, and other talented high school students from around the world. This new online experience involves case competitions and interactive digital simulations, including the Saturn Parable, an advanced leadership simulation from Wharton Interactive.
Essentials of Leadership prepares talented high school students to become leaders in the global economy. Through a curriculum of rigorous coursework and activities, students will build skills in emotional intelligence, problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and effective teamwork and collaboration. The program culminates in a simulated trip to Saturn, where small groups must navigate the obstacles of interstellar travel to achieve the goals of the mission.
Program highlights include:
• 2–3 hours of daily live lectures and presentations from outstanding Wharton faculty, instructors, and guest speakers
• Introductions to organizational leadership models and competitive strategy
• 2 Case competitions and interactive digital simulations, including The Saturn Parable, an advanced leadership simulation from Wharton Interactive, utilized by Executive and MBA students
• Daily interaction with peers and instructors to problem-solve and discuss research-based theories of leadership and teamwork
• Experiential learning opportunities designed to exercise leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
• Collaborative group projects that will test your potential as future business leaders
Advanced Leadership: The Saturn Parable:
Taking place in 2087 students assume the role of a member of the Enceladus Expedition, the first commercial space mission to Saturn’s moon Enceladus, whose south pole provides the only reliable source of liquid water beyond Earth. Each player will have to navigate real-world challenges in this fictional setting, receiving continuous, adaptive performance feedback via the gaming interface.
Admission
Admission to the online Essentials of Leadership is selective. Eligible candidates should demonstrate a record of academic excellence, formal and informal leadership roles, and a genuine interest in developing leadership skills.
All participants who successfully complete the program will earn a Wharton Global Youth Certificate of Completion.
Daily participation and engagement are required Monday through Friday. Each day will include some mixture of live, online class sessions; facilitated, small group discussions; collaborative group work; simulations; and independent work, completed within the Wharton Online Learning Platform. Live class sessions will meet as outlined below.
Live Session Schedule
Monday – Friday: 11:00AM-1:00PM Eastern Daylight Time (GMT-4)
Live, Small Group Activities: Additional small group meetings may be required to complete collaborative activities or peer project work. If necessary, these meetings will be scheduled at the students’ convenience.
Technical Requirements
In order to fully participate in this course, you will need a computer that meets minimum system requirements for both Canvas LMS and Zoom Videoconferencing.
High school students currently enrolled in grades 9-12 with demonstrated leadership ability. International students are welcome.
• Minimum 3.3 unweighted GPA, or equivalent
• Unofficial Transcript
High school transcripts and/or grade reports are required for application. Please upload an unofficial copy directly into the online application system. At least two marking periods of grades are required for review. If two marking periods are not available on your current high school transcripts, we recommend uploading a copy of 8th grade transcripts as well. If you would like to submit additional grades as they become available, you may email supplementary application materials to [email protected] before the application deadline.
• Recommendation
A recommendation completed by a high school guidance counselor, teacher, or advisor is required for application.
• 3 Short Essays:
1 - Tweet-style bio: in 140 characters or less, give us your biography as if it were a tweet.
2 - Select a fictional character you admire from a book, show, movie, etc. Explain your selection and give examples of how they demonstrate effective leadership. 200-300 words
3 - Describe a time you took on leadership responsibilities when you did not have the title of a leader. 300-400 words
• English Proficiency Scores
Non-native English speakers should submit test scores to verify English language proficiency:
1. If the student attends a high school where the primary language of instruction is English, this requirement is automatically waived.
2. If submitting test scores, TOEFL or IELTS scores are preferable, when available. The minimum TOEFL score required for admission is 100 (iBT.) The minimum IELTS score required is a 7. If TOEFL or IELTS scores are not available, applicants may submit PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores as an alternate.
• Standardized Test Scores
The submission of standardized test scores is optional. If you have score reports you wish to share you may upload an unofficial copy of your score report to the online application. Score reports should include your name.
• Activities of Activities/ Achievements
An array of extracurricular activities and/or personal achievements that denote intellectual curiosity, ability to collaborate, initiative and ambition, or diversity of interests and ideas.
• Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee of $100 is required. If applying through a community-based organization or scholarship agency, students might be eligible for an application fee waiver.

Priority deadline: March 15, 2023
Final deadline: May 3, 2023
Online program fees include: Full academic and term fees and exclusive 10-week access to the Wharton Global Youth Meetup (GYM) extracurricular programming platform.
Not included: Non-refundable $100 application fee, textbooks or academic materials required for coursework, and technology required for programming.
Financial Aid
The Wharton Global Youth Program is committed to supporting academically ambitious students with demonstrated financial need. Through a variety of need-based scholarships and financial awards, a select number of eligible program participants are provided with full or partial funding.
