In Berkeley Business Academy for Youth: High School
Entrepreneurship, 50 high school students from around the globe spend 2 weeks in the immersive campus of U.C Berkeley to develop a business idea and business plan for their team.
B-BAY courses are taught by Haas faculty, PhD candidates, and undergraduate students. Guest speakers from industry bring real-world perspective to the discussion. You’ll learn through online classroom instruction, independent research, computer lab assignments and team projects.
You’ll be held to high academic standards, but you’ll also have a lot of fun. At the end of the two-week session you will have created and presented a comprehensive business plan, worthy of any entrepreneur.
Teamwork and Leadership: Understand different leadership styles and recognize the qualities of an effective leader. Analyze and explore your own leadership style. Experience the rewards and challenges of working in a team.
Entrepreneurship: Learn the four main characteristics of entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurs identify market needs and structure their businesses.
Marketing: Learn the purpose and process of marketing and the role market research plays in analyzing what customers need and want. Perform a SWOT analysis and examine how the right marketing mix creates competitive advantage. Critically think through the marketing strategies for products at different stages in the product lifecycle.
Finance: Follow the money from sources of initial funding for a start-up to understand how capital moves. Acquire an understanding of the language of finance and the fundamentals of how financial markets function. Learn about pricing and interest rates.
Accounting: Learn how to prepare financial reports that inform investors, creditors and tax authorities about a company’s performance. Understand income statements, balance sheets, financial planning concepts, and finance strategies.
Game Theory and Negotiations: Get familiar with how the ideas and techniques of game theory are related to bargaining, conflict, and negotiation. Explore and become comfortable with the process and practice of negotiation.
Management of Organizations: Open your mind up to how organizational design, strategy, culture leadership, compensation, decision-making structures, and other human resource characteristics influence organizational performance. Put this knowledge to use in developing your business plan.
Corporate Social Responsibility/Introduction to Case Studies: Learn about global economics and why money and ideas move faster today than at any time before. What is ethical behavior in business and why you should care about it?
Public Speaking/Presentation Skills Workshop: Learn the skills needed to be a polished and competent communicator. Practice using body language and gestures while speaking. Learn the art of persuasive speaking, and even how to take charge of your fears.
All high school students are required to reside in the dorms.
Every year, 50 high-school students from around the globe spend two weeks learning at B-BAY, where:
- They immerse themselves in the culture, academics, and life at Berkeley;
- Berkeley Haas professors and corporate guest speakers share their insights and real-world experience;
- Classroom instruction is supplemented with independent research and computer lab assignments and team projects;
- Teams work together to create a comprehensive business plan;
- Teams present their business plans at the end of the session.
This college prep business program is tailored to help students:

Experience a day in the life of a college student
You’ll meet a panel of undergrads from UC Berkeley and other universities who will talk about their college experience and answer questions. Admission advisors from Berkeley Haas and UC Berkeley Undergraduate Admissions will lead an interactive session to help you better understand the domestic and international college admission process and how to apply to CAL. You will also get a head start on how to approach and write your UC personal statement and college application essay.
Other activities include a campus tour, a scavenger hunt, karaoke night and more.

Applicants must be in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12.

COVID-19 Requirements:
- Due to COVID-19, new requirements are in place. Check if your destination has travel restrictions and bring a completed copy of travel documents if needed.
- A face covering is required by U.S. federal law at the airport and onboard flights. In addition, passengers flying to the U.S. from another country, including U.S. citizens, must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 3 days of departure, or documentation of recovery. These rules do not apply to children under 2. Passengers who may be exempt from wearing a face-covering due to a disability must contact us before travel.
Visa Requirement
Because B-BAY is a non-credit, two-week program
- Citizens of countries who need a visa to enter the United States should obtain a B-2 “Visitor for Pleasure” visa, not an F-1 student visa. This allows students to enjoy tourist activities as well as to participate in B-BAY.
- Citizens of countries who participate in the Visa Waiver Program should enter the U.S. in WT “Waiver Tourist” status which permits the same flexibility.
Application Requirements:
1 - Essay:
You will have 3 questions to respond to. You must respond to all 3 questions in one essay format.
**Write an essay in English that answers the three questions. * (one essay that is 500 words, 1.5-spaced, 12-point font and includes both responses. Insert header including Last Name, First Name, Essay Prompt number that you are responding to and Word Count in the upper right corner):

(2)How does inclusion help improve the performance of individuals and teams? (3) *How will Berkeley Business Academy for Youth help you to achieve your goals? * If English is not your native language, please write one paragraph describing your English educational background and experience.
The essay questions are designed to incite honest, thoughtful responses to help us get to know you, your interests and reasons for applying to the BBAY program. In addition to content, essays are evaluated for writing and critical thinking ability, skill in organizing and presenting thoughts, and the relevance of your answer to the questions posed.
2 - Two teacher recommendations
Please have two teachers complete the application form. Teachers must email the form to [email protected] directly. We will not accept forms submitted by the student.
3 - Transcript
Students must upload a transcript including grades from the past 2 years (can be unofficial). The transcript must display the student’s name.
4 - Application Fees
A non-refundable $80 application fee must accompany the completed application. Applications submitted without payment will not be reviewed.
5 - Interviews
You may be asked to do a virtual interview with a member of the Admissions Committee to determine admission to the program.

Application Deadline: March 17, 2024 at 5 pm PST
We encourage you to apply prior to the application deadline as applications are reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis until the registration number is met.
When we receive your complete application (your application form, essay, all supplemental materials, and the application fee). An admissions decision will be made and e-mailed to you within two weeks.
