Michigan Math and Science Scholars (MMSS) is a program designed to introduce high school students to current developments and research in the sciences and to encourage the next generation of researchers to develop and retain a love of mathematics and science.
The Michigan Math and Science Scholars program is designed to offer a pre-college experience exposing students to a breadth of curricula offered at the University of Michigan while introducing high school students to current developments and research in the sciences. The program is open to any high school rising sophomore, junior or, senior from around the world! Three 2-week sessions are offered; students are given the opportunity to attend one, two or all three sessions.
Each session offers courses from science departments within the College of Literature, Science and the Arts including Anthropology; Astronomy; Chemistry; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Earth and Environmental Sciences; Mathematics; Paleontology; Psychology; and Physics.
When selecting to come to MMSS, students are given the choice of Residential or Commuter Student options. As a Residential Student, attendees will experience parts of the “college life” while living in an on-campus dorm room independently (with Counselor supervision), attending activities, pre-planned evening events and even optional weekend trips! Commuter students are welcome to join activities.
Courses will run Monday- Friday, 9 am-4:30 pm, with a 1.5 hour lunch break from 12-1:30pm
All of the necessary facilities for students throughout their stay are located on the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor campus in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan. Students choosing the Residential option, will stay at West Quad & Cambridge House (541 Thompson St); student meals will be provided at the adjacent South Quad Dining Hall. All MMSS classrooms are within ten minutes walking distance.
Students may elect to attend one, two or three two-week sessions of MMSS. A single course is elected for each session. Class will run Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm with break for lunch from 12-1:30pm.
Weekend Trips:
Each session of MMSS, the Residential Students will be offered trips to local attractions throughout the duration of their weekend stay. Commuter students are welcomed and encouraged to join as their classmates travel to places such as:
Cedar Point Amusement Park
Detroit Tigers
Detroit Institute of Arts
Michigan Science Museum.
All commuter students are welcome to join the Residential Students to South Quad Dining Hall on campus for lunch while participating in the two-week camp.
Applicant must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior in high school, meaning that they must have completed at least one year of high school and cannot have graduated prior to the program starting.
