Internships are a great opportunity for students to explore their interests and develop their extracurriculars to boost their chances of acceptance to top schools. Fortunately for young entrepreneurs and business leaders, there are many internships through which students can hone their business skills at home and abroad, online and in-person. Let’s take a look at a few of them:

Colombia Global Internship Program

This flexible internship program is open to high school students, students taking a gap year, and first-year university students. Interns travel to Medellín—Colombia’s second-largest city and a regional business capital—for six weeks to six months, where they're paired with tech and business organizations in one of Latin America’s rapidly emerging economies. The internship includes accommodation, airport pickup, participation in cultural events, career training, networking opportunities, a keynote speaker series, and more. Applications consist of a resume, an online application form, an interview, and an English test. It’s strongly recommended that interns know some Spanish.

Uber Work Experience Program

This one-month, cohort-based virtual internship is available for students in grades 8-12. Interns brainstorm and develop new products for Uber, with the potential to see their ideas launched worldwide. The Uber Work Experience Program introduces interns to the fundamentals of business by teaching the basics of marketing research through customer interviews, as well as through secondary investigations. They'll build a foundation in design by working alongside Uber to build and fine-tune mobile apps, while also working with customers to develop product management skills. Applications consist of online registration, an advisor call, and a written application.

PwC Work Experience Program

The PwC Work Experience Program is designed to immerse students into the world of management and consulting. For one month, interns learn the foundations of accounting, finance, digital tech, and consulting projects. Students work alongside mentors in the industry to conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to solve key issues in disruptive businesses. Through project-based management consulting training, interns examine how to best approach business challenges, communicate effective solutions, increase growth, and mitigate risk. This is a great program for students who want to test the waters of management and consulting before committing to an undergraduate program. Students in 8-12th grade are eligible. Applications consist of online registration, an advisor call, and a written application.

HSBC Work Experience Program

This one-month, finance and banking internship is open to students in grades 8-12. Students learn the building blocks of finance banking and asset management by exploring the core pillars of discounted cash flow analysis, comparison analysis, and fundamental and technical analysis. As the internship centers on corporate finance, students will also immerse themselves in financial decision-making and the role of finance in corporate development. Finally, interns will take a philosophical approach to the idea of money, analyzing the role of new forms like cryptocurrency and blockchain to explore the future of currency. Like the other internships on this page, applications consist of an online registration form, an advisor call, and a written application.

Conclusions

Internships are a great way for high school students to try different fields before applying to universities and committing to undergraduate programs. Additionally, working with businesses is a great way to demonstrate commitment to education and diversify your extracurriculars with real-world experience.
