Top STEM Summer Internship

If your idea of a perfect summer is a deep-dive into the STEM fields at one of the USA's top universities, then Brown’s STEM Internship Program may be the perfect fit for you!

This two-week residential program provides rising 9th and 10th graders with the chance to explore a combination of academic studies, research-based learning, and extracurricular and social activities. Students will gain experience learning and living on a college campus, insight into the various and diverse STEM fields, and a stand-out accolade for their forthcoming college applications.

So, what’s this program all about?

The Program

This program is a deep-immersive experience into the STEM subjects and the world of academia at Brown. This course is on campus and lasts for just under two weeks. Your typical day will be learning about STEM topics, then engaging with a research project, with the potential to work with Brown students and graduates. There will also be extracurricular activities, some of which are off-campus and social events in the evenings. Moreover, this program gives you the opportunity to make new friends and even join a community of like-minded STEM enthusiasts. You never know, you might even end up studying with some of them in college!

Who Can Apply?

All students ages 13-15 may apply, including international students. You may not apply if you have already participated in a Brown pre-college course. All students will need parental/guardian consent to apply. There are opportunities for financial aid but it is also ultra competitive, so you’ll need to write a cracking application! Currently, course costs are $5,218 for the 2023 intake, but there are also scholarship opportunities.

The Application Process

You will be asked to write a 250-500 word essay on a specific topic in order to demonstrate your passion for STEM and scholastic aptitude. In addition, you will need to submit your official/unofficial transcript, your current grades, and a letter of recommendation; we recommend letters of recommendation come from someone who you have worked with closely and who can speak to your work ethic! Normally this would be a teacher for someone of your age, who can comment on your grades and aptitude for STEM subjects.

If you are an international student, you will require a TOEFL score of 100. The application fee is between $50 and $100 and is non-refundable.
However, you may be able to get the application fee waived if you are:
  • Approved for a free or reduced cost lunch program in the US for the current year
  • Enrolled in a school in the Providence Public School District (PPSD) in Rhode Island
  • Associated with an official Brown pre-college partner organization and have been named a partner scholar nominee
  • The dependent of a Brown employee (employed for at least 6 months), who is benefits eligible
