Penn Summer Prep: Discover UPenn, Great Academics, and Other Top Students

If you want to spend your summer at an Ivy League university exploring liberal arts and sciences and are in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade, then why not take a look at the fantastic summer program that the University of Pennsylvania has to offer.

The Program

Running for two weeks in the summer and costing $5700, the UPenn program for high schoolers is a great opportunity to live on campus and enjoy a wide selection of courses. You would enroll in two modules from across the university, taking one in the morning and one in the afternoon. A benefit of this program at UPenn is that you can choose from a wide-range of topics, such as:

  • Genomics and Bioinformatics
  • Thinking like an anthropologist
  • Digital Media, Inequality and Cyber Civil-rights
  • Introduction to Medicine: Culture and Practice
  • Artistic Philosophy
  • Climate Politics

Requirements

Applications for Summer 2024 open on December 1st, 2023, with the deadline to apply for Penn Summer Prep on February 15th 2024. In order to apply, you should have the following:

  • 3.3 minimum high school GPA
  • Technical and intellectual writing strengths
  • Great recommendations
  • A strong extracurricular record of interest

The Penn Summer checklist includes a completed online application, an essay (no more than 400 words) describing both your academic and personal goals and why taking the summer prep program will benefit you in your future, high school transcripts, and a letter of recommendation.

In addition, an application fee of $75.00 is required, which may be waived if you attend a public or charter school or an eligible organization.

If you are a non-native English speaker, you will be expected to have a test score indicating English language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, SAT, PSAT or ACT are all accepted).

Life as a student at UPenn

During your two-week summer program in residence at UPenn, you’ll be in the vicinity of fantastic shops, restaurants, libraries and museums — all great opportunities for social outings and fun intellectual exploration. 

On the UPenn campus you’ll also have use privileges for all facilities on campus, such as fitness centers, performing arts centers and galleries, and have access to academic support and the library and its resources. Scholarships

If you attend a school district of  Philadelphia or charter school, then you may be eligible for a scholarship. You must demonstrate a need for financial aid as well as satisfying some other prerequisites. If you do get a scholarship, you’ll have to commute to campus whilst you attend the academic portion of the Summer Prep Program.
