Research Program for High School Students: Introducing Indigo
image

Research experience is a valuable addition to any college application and is therefore not only a wonderful way for high school students to boost their college apps, but also elevate their knowledge in a given field of interest. For students looking to engage with research in a guided, rigorous way, the Indigo Research Intensive Summer (IRIS) Program is a great place to start!

The Program

IRIS is a six-week, fully online course offers students the opportunity to complete a research paper under the guidance of university professors, who specialize in areas ranging from Biology to Finance. This course also includes seminars on research methodology, data analysis, and communication skills, all of which are transferable to all areas of a student’s academic career.

Why Do Research in High School?

First and foremost, independent research helps you cultivate your own knowledge and expertise. Students with research experience have a head start when it comes to discovering their passions and strengths because they have engaged in a kind of self study, which not only helps us learn about the world around us but also about ourselves. Additionally, research means contributing to your field of interest, making a real world contribution to the world’s knowledge base; Indigo experts and staff can help you edit and refine your research paper and reach toward publishing your findings in an academic journal.

Last but not least, research projects will make your college apps stand out! These kinds of projects show application readers that you are a rigorous learner, someone who is curious about the world around them and wants to contribute in a real way to making it a better place. By engaging in research at such a young age, you demonstrate to colleges and universities what kind of student you would be if they were to accept you as a student: one who is dedicated to their academics and to their community.

Course Format

The IRIS program follows the following four key steps:

  1. Choose a Course: Students choose one of five offered courses and sign up to take part in seminars on research methodology, data analysis, and communication skills.
  2. Collaborate with Peers: Students are given the opportunity to to work alongside 3-10 of their peers in a small group setting, creating a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded folks from around the world.
  3. Present Your Project: Students are asked to present their key findings and receive feedback from university professors and peers.
  4. Get a Certificate: Upon completion, students will receive a signed IRIS program certificate, which can be included in their college applications.
