Tech Design Programs for High School Students
image

In an earlier blog post, we looked at several visual and graphic design summer programs for high schoolers. However, design is such a broad field that its implications reach far beyond visual design. As technology rapidly advances, tech design is bound to grow in importance, with designers working at the intersections of visual design, user experience, video game design, VR design, and artificial intelligence. Though these fields are still emerging, we’re already seeing their dramatic effect on just about all facets of contemporary life. There’s never been a better time to learn about tech design. Let’s see what these programs offer:

Intro to AR Coding with Python for High Schoolers, Camp Integem

This one-week summer program immerses students into core design tools like Python and iCreator to develop holographic Augmented Reality projects at the intersection of science and creativity. Pulling from the Stanford Design School, Camp Integem provides students with a foundation in digital art, coding logic, UI and UX design, Design Thinking, and multi-stage Holographic AR experience. Students who come to the program with Python experience will be set up with more advanced projects so that they may continue developing their skills. Camp Integem is a California-based commuter program with locations across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Orange County. High Schoolers ages 14+ are welcome to apply.

AI with Robotics Engineering with Advanced 3D Holographic AR Coding for High Schoolers, Camp Integem

The second Camp Integem offering on this list, this three-week commuter AI design camp introduces bright high schoolers to artificial intelligence, robotics, and holographic augmented reality, with the potential to earn a certificate from NVIDIA—a world leader in AI technology—upon completion of an AI project. This program emphasizes an experiential learning model through a hands-on approach to education. The course includes units on core AI principles, AI training techniques, Python coding, UX and UI design, 3D design, 3D modeling, storytelling, and Stanford’s Design Thinking approach to problem-solving and critical analysis. Though no previous experience is required, students will leave this accelerated program with advanced design skills. This program is also open to high schoolers ages 14+ and has locations across the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Orange County.

Coding for Game Design High School Summer Program, New York University

Game design is a fun and evolving field at the forefront of technology and art. Young coders at NYU’s two-week Coding for Game Design program will work with the CREATE Lab to make their own games using Unity and C# scripts. The program emphasizes individual and group learning through workshops, critical gameplay, and dedicated development time. The program is available with residential and commuter options. Need and merit-based scholarships are available, with deadlines in early April.

Finally...

As AI, AR, and other cutting-edge technologies continue to shake up our world, it’s even more important for young people to stay on top of these changes. These fields offer exciting new opportunities to develop paradigm-shifting tools and to work in rapidly growing jobs as our technology advances. While coding, AI, game design, and augmented reality may be outside the scope of a traditional high school education, there are still many opportunities for students to master these skills. Happy designing!
